For E46 (non-M3) owners to go to the track or
autocross, some may have encountered fuel starvation issues when the gas tank
gets below as much as 3/4 full.
In the E46 M3, BMW installed a "fuel
baffle fixture" into the gas tank, to prevent fuel starvation under severe
g-loads with sloshing fuel. This part is inexpensive and fits perfectly
into non-M3 fuel tanks with no modifications.

This plastic baffle is more like a small
"fuel pocket" which holds a small volume of fuel, but apparently
enough to continue supply to the fuel pump when the tank gets low. Of course,
this is until the fuel levels out again from the excessive movement.
Installation does require removal of the fuel pump (passenger side of the rear
seat) for access.
