Rogue Engineering Manufactured Engines
As S54s become older and older, we discovered that replacement engines in the marketplace became more scarce (clean, low mileage ones anyway).  With this in mind, we started collecting our own stash of S54s for future rebuild inventory.  We started with building some for our own endurance racecar with the thinking that if it could sustain continuous beating in a racing environment that it should do pretty well in a street driven car.  Armed with this information, we set out to offer reliable, hand-built engines.

Block
The block is first inspected for any cracks or imperfections.  If significant scoring of the walls is evident, it automatically becomes a candidate for an overbored engine.  Otherwise is is honed to become a stock 3.2L.  All block work is performed with a torque plate.  After any block work, it is hot tanked to clean out any gasket material leftover from the previous assembly.  We use OE main bearings and factory cranks.  New main bolts are used.  Once completed, a needle scaler is used to remove any surface rust to prep for high temperature engine paint.

OEM factory pistons are cleaned, measured with new rings on the 3.2L builds.  Aftermarket forged pistons are available at additional cost.

New!  The new supercharged bottom end spec features forged, lower compression pistons (9:1 instead of 11.5:1).  Pauter rods are required for these builds.  Select one of the two heavier duty options, depending on your anticipated hp output.

The 3.3L builds feature aftermarket forged pistons.  We spec 11.5:1 compression pistons unless otherwise specified by the customer.  Special order pistons for different compression requirements will have a lead time and possible additional cost.

New!  The 3.5L stroker build (bottom end parts by 5150 AutoSport features CP-Carrillo forged pistons, SP connecting rods and 4340 billet steel crankshaft).  We do not recommend or endorse pushing the limits of the S54 beyond it's typically engineered figures of 8200rpm,  Typical builds like this usually mean upgraded head parts and upgraded cams/followers.
    • Stroker crank is 7 lbs lighter than stock.
    • Build is meant for 8000rpm.  NO forced induction!
    • CP pistons are forged and includes wrist pins, rings and wire locks
    • Crankshaft is turned, polished and coated with anti-wear coating.  Fully balanced.
Headwork
We refurbish the S54 head using the OEM dual valve springs and OEM intake and exhaust valves.  All heads get new valve guides and seals.   The head is decked to ensure flatness.  At additional cost, we can use upgraded valves, upgraded valve springs, and titanium retainers.

We use OEM cams and followers and at additional cost, we can use aftermarket cams and DLC followers during the build.

After completely assembled, the engine gets a final valve adjustment (normally $795 on cars that come in for service).

The Bottom End
On the bottom of the engine, ACL Race rod bearings (with 0.001" extra clearance) are used with ARP rod bolts.  We have used these in many street and race engines with excellent results.  If you're feeling extra generous, you can elect to use a different brand of rod bearing and rod bolt at additional cost.  Considering that these are generally considered wear/maintenance items, there is NO benefit to use more expensive parts as there is NO performance gain, NO weight savings, and NO documented mileage interval improvement.  Typical costs on a rod bearing job on cars that come in is $1495.

S54 Vanos Bulletproofing
Each engine is equipped and sold with a Vanos system entirely bulletproofed and assembled with industry-proven parts that are better than OEM.  Parts from Beisan Systems and other upgraded parts make sure that the entire is completely ready to perform.  Note that this Vanos service is normally $3200 on vehicles that are brought in to us.

Seals, Hardware and more
Every bolt that requires replacement is replaced.  Every seal and gasket that needs to be replaced is done as well.  Items such as the timing cover, rear main seal cover are vapor blasted clean before installation with new seals.  Oil pump are disassembled and inspected for wear or scoring.
